Applying for a provisional licence

You need a provisional licence before you can learn to drive.

To apply for this, you must complete the application form DL1 from either the 'Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) form ordering service', or from your local Post Office. It usually takes about 4 weeks for your application to be processed and for you to receive your licence. If you want to start learning on your seventeenth birthday remember to apply early.

The Theory Test

The theory test consists of two parts; a multiple choice section and a Hazard Perception test. We can offer a range of support and advice to help you.

You can book your Theory Test through the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) website www.gov.uk/book-a-driving-theory-test

The Practical Test

You can book your Practical Test through the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) website www.gov.uk/book-practical-driving-test Before the test you will have an eye sight check and be asked some vehicle safety questions. Then you will be tested on your general driving ability. The test lasts for around 40 minutes.
